Which Protein bar is best for me?
There are so many protein bars on the market nowadays its hard to keep track of them all. Plus, their protein amounts vary so how should you determine what bar is right for you? What do you look for in a protein bar? Which protein bars have the most protein? These are all questions you should ask yourself when look for the right one. Few nutrients are as important as protein. If you don't get enough, your health and body composition could suffer. However, there are vastly different opinions about how much protein you actually need. When looking at all the different protein bar options here are a few things to remember.
1. What is considered high protein?
What you consider high protein might not be what someone else considers high. However, legally 20% or more of the daily value is considered high protein. So, if we go with the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) that men need 56 grams of protein per day and women need 46 grams, we would say that high protein is above 11 for men and above 9 for women. However, the DRI is based on inactive people so it makes sense that people who are physically active will see high protein as anywhere from 15-20 grams per bar or serving.
2. What ratios of proteins, carbohydrates and fats should I follow?
Based on the DRI, 10-35% of your total calories should come from protein. So, if you consume 2,000 calories a day, at least 200 should come from protein. To that same note, 45-65% of your total calories should come from carbs. On a diet consisting of 2,000 calories per day, at least 900 should come from carbohydrates. Also, 20-35% of your total calories should come from fat. This means at least 400 should come from fat.
Promax Original Line features a carb to protein ratio of 2:1. This allows you to keep your energy levels high and encourages efficient muscle recovery. These bars are delicious and contain 18 vitamins and minerals and 20 grams of protein.
3. How much sugar is the right amount?
When choosing a protein bar, be sure to read the nutritional information on the product wrapper. According to the DRI, you should only be consuming less than 10% of your calories in added sugars. While sugar is the one ingredient that we can't get enough of, we should watch to make sure our protein bars don't contain lots of added sugar. Instead look for low sugar protein bars or bars that are made with sugar that is naturally occurring. Also, you should make sure to avoid artificial sweeteners like maltitol that are found in many sugar-free products. They can cause gastric distress and sugar spikes just like regular sugar while still being considered low-sugar.
